The Swedish life science industry organisation SwedenBIO and Biocom, the life science association of California, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to undertake cooperative activities.

SwedenBIO is the main Swedish life science industry in Sweden with more than 300 member companies. Biocom California is the leading advocate for Californias life science sector with clusters across the US and Japan.

Both organisations share a mutually beneficial cooperation going back to 2020. The collaboration took off with a networking event in November 2020 bringing together more than 70 selected companies, investors and academic actors from Sweden and California to brainstorm about how to overcome obstacles standing in the way of innovations in these fields.

The MOU aims to enhance their cooperation within the fields of life sciences, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, health & medical technologies.

“Sweden and California both have dynamic and innovative life science sectors. We look forward to deepening our cooperation with Biocom California to explore more ways to cooperate and exchange new ideas”, says Jessica Martinsson, CEO and Director General, SwedenBIO.

Sweden offers incredibly innovative research and a rich variety of therapeutics, and California is home to the largest biotechnology ecosystem in the world.

“SwedenBio and Biocom California have enjoyed a collaborative relationship for 5 years. This MOU will strengthen formally that relationship, building a bridge between the innovative life science communities in Sweden and California”, says Joe Panetta, president emeritus of Biocom California.

The MOU was signed during a ceremony in California on January 13th 2025 by Marjo Puumalainen, International Director of Sweden and Joe Panetta, president emeritus of Biocom California.
